Photo Tip of the Week: Highlighting those Eyes

Posted on July 12th, 2011 by admin  |  No Comments »

Wait to shoot until people look into the light. If you’re trying to photograph people in miserably low light, simply wait until your subject looks up into the light. When they do, be ready. You may have only an instant when their faces are fully lit. Suddenly a “bad” light situation will become tolerable. This is an old trick. Think of all those great pictures from the classic age of jazz photography. The musicians are always looking up!

Photo Tip of the Week: Eye Contact!

Posted on July 7th, 2011 by admin  |  No Comments »

As the old adage goes, the eyes are the windows to your soul. This holds true for portraiture, where the ideal point of focus is your subject’s eyes. However, if your subject is slanted and not squared facing you, remember to focus on the eye closest to you. This is crutial when shooting large wedding parties. Taking multiple images one after another ensures at least one or two photos blink-free
For group shots, utilize your camera’s burst-mode shooting function and fire off multiple frames in order to ensure that no one blinks in the image.

Photography Tip of the Week: The Golden Hour

Posted on June 28th, 2011 by admin  |  No Comments »

The golden hour is the period of time just after sunrise or just before sunset when the light in the sky is the softest and most flattering. High noon on a sunny day is the absolute worst time to take any photos, as the light is very harsh and creates a lot of contrast. Many details get lost into the shadows created by the sunlight. If you’re on vacation, put your camera away during the day. I know – that’s crazy, you say. Take out your camera again when the sun is within two hours of sunset and then snap photos like crazy. Keep this in mind when scheduling your portraits on your wedding day!

2010 Olympics wrap it up in Vancouver

Posted on March 1st, 2010 by admin  |  No Comments »

I was hooked on the winter Olympics this year, maybe because it was on our home soil, Canada. It’s nice to see that Canada now broke some world records with the highest number of Gold medals overall. From the new skiing events to the new snowboarding events it was the most exciting Olympics that I ever watched. Oh yes, the hockey game…Canada vs USA last night was amazing. The fact they went into overtime made the game even more exciting. It was also great to see a familiar face, Two-time Olympic Champion Catriona Le May Doan holding the Olympic Flame.

Best wishes from all of us at Piper Studios! If you have a comment about the Olympics that you woudl like to share please do so.

Thank you Canada!
